What is Content Marketing?
Content is anything that adds value to the reader's life.
Avinash Kaushik
Content Marketing is a type of marketing that involves creating and sharing material online (such as: videos, blog posts, and social media posts), which does not explicitly or directly promote the brand but aims to provide content that benefits the audience and stimulates their interest in its products or services.
The Content Marketing Institute defines it as: A strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience—and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action. Instead of pitching your products or services, you are providing truly relevant and useful content to your prospects and customers to help them solve their issues. Content marketing is used by leading brands such as: P&G, Microsoft, Cisco Systems, John Deere, and many others.
The History of Content Marketing
The goal of mentioning the history of content marketing is not to give you a boring lesson about dates and numbers, but to confirm to you that content marketing has been around for a very long time.
You may have purchased something because of content marketing, and to confirm its importance according to many sources, most notably the Content Marketing Institute, content marketing began in earnest in 1730, more than 300 years ago.
At that time, there was a man who owned a printing press and wanted to market it to increase his profits. He did something very smart; he printed an annual calendar guide containing the most important events of the year (holidays, occasions, etc.) that mattered to people.
This was very common in America at the time. People were so impressed with this guide that everyone wanted to create their own, so this man directed them to his printing press, and in doing so, he achieved higher sales.
Let me give you another example. Do you remember, when you were young, the radio and television magazines (or any similar magazines in your country)? They consisted of news about celebrities and socialites.
But the most important part of the magazine was the schedule of series and movies that everyone was waiting for, so they could decide which shows to follow. In this way, the Radio and Television Union promoted the movies and series.
The higher the viewership, the higher the advertising profits. That is why the price of the magazine was very low so that everyone could buy it; this was a form of content marketing.
I think you now realize that the concept of content marketing is not a recent invention. Many people have relied on it for a very long time—perhaps not by its current definition, but by the same approach and strategy, which we will explain later.
What is Content Marketing?
If you are still asking this question, you might be right. You may have recognized some forms of content marketing, some of which I mentioned earlier, but what is content marketing in light of all the communication tools and technology we currently live with?
Content marketing is a long-term marketing strategy that focuses on creating and distributing content aimed at a specific group of people, ensuring this content is valuable and useful, which helps that group make purchasing decisions and, consequently, generates profits.
Thus, content marketing is the creation of content in all possible ways, which solves the problems of a specific target audience or helps them achieve a certain goal, and then converts a large portion of them into customers.
Here, several questions might come to mind: On what basis is content created? How is this content distributed? And perhaps the most important question: How can this content be used to make money?
You will find the answers to all these questions and more in the coming lines. Let's continue!
The Importance of Content Marketing
Before we delve into the various strategies, I want to emphasize the importance of content marketing. The following points will clarify the power of this type of marketing.
These reasons will not only make you believe in the necessity of using content marketing in your marketing plans, but they will also open the door for you to think outside the box and be creative.
Spreading Awareness
Spreading awareness is one of the most important reasons for using content marketing: ensuring people know you exist in the industry. Imagine, for example, that you have a travel agency offering travel services to Asia.
Because you understand the importance of content marketing, you created a blog on your website dedicated to travel, and one of your articles was "The Best Activities You Can Do in Singapore."
Just wonder how many people will discover your company and the services you offer through this article alone—people you might not have been able to reach through traditional marketing means.
The more you keep your brand in front of people, the better it is for you.
Demonstrating the Strength of Your Services and Products
Let's go back to the same previous example of the travel agency. If I were that customer searching for travel deals to Singapore, and I visited your site and saw all that information and those articles on the subject,
then I visited another site that also offers travel deals to Asia, but does not provide the wealth of tips and information that you provide, do you think I would deal with your company or the other one?
This is one of the most important reasons why content marketing is essential: it empowers you, establishing you as an expert and authority in the eyes of those interested in your field. This builds trust more quickly, leading them to choose you over others.
Attracting Visitors
This reason alone makes content marketing indispensable, as the content you create across various platforms—which we will detail later—will generate visits to your website or services.
The more traffic you get—provided your product is good—the more customers you will acquire and the higher your profits will be.
Constantly Reminding Your Customers of Your Services
There is a golden rule in marketing that states: "A customer needs to interact with a new brand about 7 times before they choose to engage with it and start making a purchase."
In other words, a potential customer may need to be exposed to your brand multiple times (via social media ads, articles, videos, images, or outdoor advertising) before they buy from you.
This is precisely why giant companies like Pepsi rely on promoting themselves through every possible channel (images, YouTube ads, school activities, event sponsorships, and television commercials), despite their fame and market position.
All of this is done to imprint the brand image in your mind. This is why many people, when thinking of soft drinks, immediately think of the Pepsi brand.
When you rely on multiple methods and channels to promote and deliver your content to your customers, you will achieve exceptional results.
How Do You Determine the Right Content?
There are several factors upon which you can create content that suits your audience. If you understand these factors well, any content you publish will be highly beneficial and, God willing, will achieve positive results.
Audience Type and Persona
Do you think the content targeting a mother or homemaker is the same as content targeting a teenage girl? Of course not; this is what is meant by a "Buyer Persona."
You must be aware of the nature of your customers, all the problems they face in their lives, their goals, and their budgets. All these details will give you an idea of what they need.
Look, for example, at the giant company Cadbury, one of the largest chocolate manufacturers in the world. If you search their YouTube channel, you will find many videos providing dessert recipes.
This is because most women interested in chocolate are also interested in sweets and various recipes. Therefore, they created this content to help them, intelligently utilizing content to promote their product.
There are other examples, and we will cover many of them in the following points.
Stages of the Buying Process
When anyone wants to buy a new product or service, they often go through three stages on their way to deciding which source to rely on for what they need. These stages are:
Awareness Stage: This is the stage where a person realizes they have a problem or a goal they seek to achieve. Therefore, the search here is superficial (e.g., "How can I lose weight?").
Consideration Stage: In this stage, the person starts thinking seriously about solving the problem. They search the internet or perhaps consult experts. However, this time, they are searching not just for the problem they have, but for a solution as well (e.g., "Best types of diets").
Decision Stage: In this stage, the search and thinking involve comparing solutions. Consequently, this is the stage where a person is most ready to buy. Therefore, you will find that most searches focus on comparisons between various available options (e.g., "Best weight loss clinics" or "Best weight loss products").
As you think about creating your content, you must keep these stages in mind so that you produce the right content and guide the individual to the final stage through you.
Let me give you an example: since you are interested in digital marketing, you have certainly heard of the term (Lead Generation), which is used to increase the number of potential customers for any business.
If you look at one of the largest companies in this field globally, the giant Optinmonster, you will find that it creates content for every stage.
If you look at their website pages and blog, you will find content revolving around the following: (What is lead generation – Lead generation strategies – Comparisons between Optinmonster and other similar services, etc.).
If you look closely, you will find that the content targets every stage of the buyer's journey mentioned earlier, with a specific approach for each stage to convert that person into a customer. This is a very important point that I will present to you in detail later.
The Platform
The platform on which you display content plays a major role in the type of content itself. Do not think that an article on your blog will be the same as an article you write on LinkedIn or a post on Facebook.
Every platform has specific rules and a unique nature that you must adhere to in order to achieve the maximum return from your content.
Trends or Trending Events
All large and even medium-sized companies participate in important events that bring many people together. You will find them publishing content related to holidays, popular football events, and more.
Therefore, keep this in mind when publishing content. Always stay up-to-date with any event, constantly follow what is new and what people are talking about, and try to create content revolving around this event as long as it suits your field.
To help you think outside the box, I recommend reading the article on the Art of Marketing, which will provide you with numerous examples and strategies to create content suitable for every event in an intelligent way.
Content Marketing Strategy in Steps
Now that you are aware of all the factors upon which any content is created for use in the marketing process, it is time to put all this knowledge into action through a clear, step-by-step strategy.
1- Content and Idea Research
The first step in the content marketing process is research. It is true that you now know many topics you should talk about according to the previous factors, but this is not enough.
You must determine priorities; some topics are more important and should be started first because they are linked to your field. You must also consider the budget and the resources available to you.
For this reason, you must research well. Search using search engines, social media sites, and groups; look at what your competitors are doing, until you find the best possible ideas.
2- Content Creation
The second step is the actual creation of the content. Of course, you know the type of content: it could be written in the form of articles, images on social media sites, videos, or audio clips on the radio and similar platforms.
The most important thing about content is that it should be of high quality, provide real value, and contain a specific action for the potential customer to take, or what is known as a (CTA – Call To Action), in order to achieve results.
What is the benefit of creating strong and good content without it achieving results, without converting anyone into a customer or even a lead? Because of the importance of this matter, I will talk about it in detail later.
There are many forms of content; you don't have to limit yourself to just writing articles. You can create e-books, or even printed books, emails, images, or even a simple animation program. Always try to think outside the box.
To assist you in the content creation process, we have published several articles that explain everything you need to know about creating all different forms of content professionally, as well as the tools you should use.
3- Content Promotion
This is the third step in a content marketing strategy. After you have studied all the factors and created good content, you must promote it and distribute it everywhere.
There are numerous channels you can rely on to promote your content, whether it be search engines, direct communication, or social media. Each channel has a specific approach, and this is what I will explain in the following points.
4- Measuring Results
The fourth step is measuring results. You need to know which piece of content is your best and which platforms provide you with a higher return so that you can focus on them more.
Perhaps LinkedIn is far better for you than marketing via Instagram, or perhaps the opposite. The more you delve into reading and analyzing the results, the more you can improve your strategy, thereby achieving better results.
Even if you create a printed advertisement and distribute it, you can evaluate the ad's success by the number of calls you receive (you can use more than one phone number to track different ads and measure the results of each separately).
Content Marketing Channels
Promotion is a very important step in a content marketing strategy, and the more your business relies on multiple marketing channels, the better it is for you.
I mentioned earlier the importance of diversifying the channels you rely on for marketing, but there is another very important reason you must keep in mind, which is so that you don't lose your business overnight.
Imagine, for example, that you rely heavily on Facebook marketing to publish content. What would happen if a problem occurred with Facebook? Perhaps it stops working, or it stops being free, or advertising prices on it rise significantly. What would you do then?
This applies to other platforms and marketing channels. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, and try to rely on the maximum number of marketing channels possible to avoid any problems, as many people have lost their projects because of this.
1- Offline Marketing
This marketing channel is not just about printed materials, advertising banners, books, or sending representatives to different companies to promote your services to them.
It also means being present at events related to the audience you are trying to target. This is why Microsoft relies on organizing competitions for university students and providing them with useful lectures and seminars; this is a form of content marketing.
For the same reason, Pepsi organizes football tournaments for students, and it is the same reason that large stores (hypermarkets) organize competitions and bring in famous chefs to attend. All these are forms of content marketing.
Offline marketing achieves very good results, so think about your industry, the type of audience you are targeting, and, of course, the resources you have available.
2- Search Engine Content Marketing
Marketing through search engines, known as SEO, is considered one of the most important digital marketing channels. There is a statistic stating that more than 68% of companies worldwide rely on this channel for marketing.
As long as you have a website, you should leverage this incredible marketing channel to your advantage because it costs almost nothing, and it is a long-term channel, meaning your efforts will not go to waste and will continue to bring you new customers and clients.
3- Content Marketing via Social Media
Social media has become indispensable to everyone; no matter their age or interests, you will find your customers on some or all of the various social media platforms.
However, not every platform is suitable for you or your business, because each platform has its own nature, so you need to know how to choose the right platform for you and how to market on social media sites.
4- Content Marketing via Public Relations and Partnerships
Why do you think Pepsi always runs joint advertisements with Chipsy—no, not because their names sound similar ?—but because they target almost the same customer base.
For the same reason, you find some medical service companies contracting with unions, for example, to provide tools, lectures, and medical information that engineers, lawyers, or others might need.
This is what is meant by marketing through public relations. Try to think of the various companies, factories, and workshops that could benefit from anything you offer, and reach out to them.
Do not try to sell them anything; instead, provide them with tools they may need, such as publications or information their customers might require. In this way, you build friendships and relationships that help you promote your services in the future.
Think outside the box a little, work hard, and you will find yourself outperforming all your competitors in leveraging content marketing.
Content Marketing Tools
There are many content marketing tools you can rely on to research, create, and monitor the results of your content, the most important of which are:
1. Google Analytics: A free tool from Google that helps you track and analyze everything related to your website, thereby helping you evaluate the marketing campaigns for every piece of content you create.
2. Feedly: A wonderful free tool that helps you follow your competitors or popular sites in your field so you can find ideas for the content you want to create.
3. Sumo: A great tool that helps you find the most popular written content being shared on social media across various fields, allowing you to know the type of content that achieves the best results and resonates with your customers.
4. Google Trends: A great free tool from Google that helps you identify the most trending topics at any given time that people are searching for at a high rate.
5. A Scheduling Tool: You can rely on a simple sheet or Google Calendar, or any tool that suits your business; what matters is having a clear schedule for your content and its objective. The tool I personally rely on most often is Trello.
How to Properly Create a CTA
This is the most important point in this guide, as it is the step that turns all previous efforts into tangible results. What is the point of creating the best video or article in your field if this content does not make people take the actions you want?
The Call To Action (CTA), as I mentioned earlier, is the purpose of any piece of content. For example, if you distributed flyers for a new restaurant you opened, what is the purpose of that flyer?
The purpose is for anyone who sees the flyer to visit my restaurant; that is why you will find the restaurant's address at the end of the flyer in bold font and distinct colors.
Imagine if I created the same post without a headline; this is exactly what happens when you don't include the right CTA in any content you produce.
The CTA depends on the factors we mentioned earlier, especially the stages of the buying process. Each stage has a specific purpose; look at the following example which illustrates some different types of CTAs.
CTA Examples
You will find that each of these types is suitable for different stages of the buying process. For instance, if someone is searching for the best travel destinations in Singapore, do not expect them to buy from you immediately; instead, you could have them subscribe to a mailing list or contact you.
For example, if you offer medical information or advice, you could place a phone number at the end of the article, post, or even video, so that anyone interested can contact you, which then allows you to convert them into a customer.
If you look closely, you will also find that all CTA examples generally fall into two categories:
Either acquiring a lead (meaning obtaining customer information to communicate with them in the future – such as a phone number, email, or a follow on social media).
Or selling directly.
Therefore, try to ensure that every piece of content you have contains a specific CTA based on its context. For example, you can run a simple contest aimed at increasing your social media followers so they are exposed to posts about your products, which might lead them to purchase from you in the future.
You can provide free products or services (e-books, images, templates, etc.) in exchange for the information of interested individuals, which you can then use to contact them and convert them into customers.
For this reason, you must always ensure that your content has a specific and clear CTA so that you can convert as many people interested in your services and products as possible into customers.
One of the most prominent channels that helps you with this is email marketing. Some consider it a separate marketing channel, while others do not. If you are interested in this, I recommend you check out the following guide.
Tips for Improving Content Marketing Results
Repurpose your content across multiple platforms; for instance, if you have a good article, why not turn it into an infographic and publish it on various social media sites?
Think outside the box. I mentioned this before, and I am emphasizing it again: do not be traditional and follow only what is already established in the market. Experiment; all ideas and strategies did not exist one day until someone invented them.
Track every piece of content you create and the results you get from it. Although I have mentioned this before, it is a point where many marketers fall short. Analyze and read all the data so you can improve continuously, and never be lazy.
Use paid advertising. When you find that a certain piece of content is achieving good results and engagement (an article, post, or video), promote it through paid ads; you will achieve better and faster results.
Paid advertising has become a very important part of the marketing process. This is why content marketing is so essential, as it allows you to test multiple styles and methods for your content, which helps you save a lot of money on paid marketing campaigns.
Content marketing is an extremely important tool that every marketer should rely on in their plans. It saves a lot of effort and money, and it also helps you identify your customers' problems and goals, which allows you to improve your products and services to meet those needs.
Finally, content marketing also helps customers connect with you more and more, as they realize they are dealing with ordinary humans just like them. This helps turn them into loyal customers, which in turn generates more profit for you.
